Why Financial Literacy Matters to Us
In 2006 ASPECT developed an online financial literacy program called Your Money Matters. This program was developed with funding from Vancity Credit Union with support from Society of Economic Development and Innovation (SEDI) and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, based on the recognition that people’s lack of financial literacy impacts their ability to find and maintain employment. Since this time, our team has been deeply entrenched in the world of financial literacy. This has allowed us to understand current financial environments as they relate to Canadian’s spending and savings habits; and where knowledge is lacking to build long term financial sustainability for individuals, families and communities at large.
We have avidly followed the work of the both the Certified General Accountants of Canada and the Federal Government’s Task Force on Financial Literacy. As stated in the Federal Government’s Task Force on Financial Literacy report to the Minister of Finance:
- “Financial literacy is an essential life skill for all Canadians and it is acquired through lifelong learning.”
- “Canadians are faced with financial decisions every day, some of which can have lasting consequences for the rest of their lives. We believe that Canadians should therefore strive to be knowledgeable about the financial products and services they use, especially before making key decisions such as getting a credit card, taking on a mortgage, obtaining insurance and making investments.”
- “Parents have a role to play in fostering a home environment in which the whole family can discuss and learn about money.”
- “Financial literacy is a matter of shared responsibility among many stakeholders… Any campaign to improve financial literacy must recognize the involvement and contribution of these stakeholders, who have a powerful and legitimate role to play.
